What is WEBP?

WebP came out of Google in 2010. It borrows the block prediction from the VP8 video codec and applies it to a single still frame, and a separate lossless mode was bolted on later. It does lossy and lossless, carries an alpha channel, and animates, so one format covers ground that JPEG, PNG and GIF used to divide between them. Files typically land a quarter to a third under the equivalent JPEG at matched quality. Every current browser renders one. So does most desktop and mobile image software by now — which is the practical difference between WebP and the newer formats that beat it on paper.

What is an AVIF File?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It offers significantly better compression than JPEG and WebP while maintaining excellent visual quality. AVIF supports transparency, HDR, and wide color gamuts, but is not yet universally supported by all image editors and platforms.

AVIF vs WEBP

AVIF is the better compressor. WebP is the better-supported format, and that gap is the whole reason this conversion exists. Built on the AV1 video codec, AVIF generally reaches smaller files than WebP at matched quality, with stronger handling of high dynamic range and wide colour. WebP is fifteen years older and correspondingly more universal. Older Safari versions, a long tail of desktop applications and plenty of CMS upload pipelines handle WebP happily while rejecting or mangling AVIF. Going the other way, from AVIF to WebP, usually produces a somewhat larger file, and because both formats are lossy it is a re-encode rather than a repackage. You do it when something downstream refuses the AVIF, and not before.

Will the WebP file be larger than the AVIF?

Usually, yes. AVIF compresses more efficiently, so re-encoding at comparable visual quality tends to produce a bigger file, often 20 to 50 percent bigger depending on the image. That is the price of compatibility. It will still come in well under the same picture as a JPEG or a PNG — you are giving up part of AVIF's advantage, not all of it.

Does converting between two lossy formats hurt quality?

Yes, a little. The AVIF is decoded to raw pixels and encoded again as WebP, which is a second generation of lossy compression, and the artefacts of the first pass get compressed along with the image itself. At the default quality of 85 that is hard to see on an ordinary photograph. When the source is a good AVIF and the result matters, push the slider to 90 or higher; the file grows, and the second-generation loss stops mattering.

Why not just keep the AVIF?

If everything in your pipeline handles AVIF, keep it. It is the better format, and this conversion costs you both size and a generation of quality. Convert when something concrete refuses it: an older Safari you still support, a CMS that rejects the upload, a design tool that will not open the file, a client who cannot view it. Compatibility is the only good reason here. It is also a common one.

Does transparency survive the conversion?

Yes. AVIF and WebP both carry a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas cross over intact. Converting either one to JPG is the case to avoid: JPG has no transparency support at all, so those pixels come out solid black rather than clear. For a cut-out background, WebP or PNG are the sensible destinations.
