What is JPG?
JPG, or JPEG after the Joint Photographic Experts Group that standardised it in 1992, is what almost every camera, phone and website agreed on for photographs. It works by discarding information the eye is poor at noticing — fine colour variation above all — which is how it reaches file sizes a fraction of an uncompressed original. The trade is permanent. What leaves the file never comes back into it. There is no transparency channel of any kind. Every device, editor, printer and upload form you are likely to meet supports JPG, and that is why people keep converting to it long after better formats arrived.
What is a GIF File?
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is a bitmap image format that supports animation and transparency. While GIF is universally supported, it's limited to 256 colors per frame, making it unsuitable for photographs. Converting GIF to other formats can improve quality for static images.
GIF vs JPG
GIF and JPG fail in opposite directions. GIF is palette-based and lossless within its 256 colours, so it is excellent for flat graphics and terrible for photographs, which come out banded and speckled with dithering. JPG is the reverse. It reconstructs smooth photographic gradients beautifully, then makes a mess of hard edges and text, where its compression leaves ringing and a scatter of mosquito noise around every letterform. So there is one case where this conversion is right: the GIF contains a photograph. When the GIF holds a logo, a screenshot or a chart, PNG is the better destination and will give you a smaller, cleaner file than JPG ever manages.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens to an animated GIF?
You get the first frame as a single still JPG. JPG has no concept of animation. The conversion reads one frame out of the file. If the animation is the point, this is not the tool. If you were after a thumbnail, then the first frame is normally the right one.
What happens to transparent areas?
They come out black. JPG has no transparency channel, so anything see-through has to be replaced with a solid colour, and the code fills it with black rather than white. It catches people converting logos, and the result looks broken rather than merely subtly wrong. Any transparency in the GIF at all and PNG is the better destination: it keeps the transparency, and for that kind of image it usually looks better anyway.
Should I convert GIF to JPG at all?
Only if the GIF holds a photograph. That is the honest answer. GIF was misused for years for screenshots, diagrams and logos, and PNG is the better destination for every one of them, being smaller, sharper, lossless and able to keep transparency. JPG's compression is tuned for continuous-tone photography. It actively degrades hard edges and text. Look at what is inside the file before you choose.
Will converting to JPG lose quality?
Yes, some. JPG is lossy, and the GIF has already been through a round of colour reduction, so you are stacking a second generation of loss on the first. At quality 92 the added loss is very hard to see on ordinary photographic content. Push the slider to 95 or above if the image matters, or convert to PNG if you want no further loss at all.
